Surely Parliament could legislate to require the Prime Minister to revoke the Article 50 notification, if Parliament has not approved the Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration by (say) March 28?
E.g. EU (Revocation of Notification) Act 2019:

1. (1) The PM shall revoke the notification issued on 29/3/2017 under Article 50 TEU

1. (2) Sub (1) takes effect on 28/3/2019 if the withdrawal agreement has not been ratified in accordance with EU (Withdrawal Act) 2018, s 13

With so much Brexit-related doom and gloom around, I thought it might be fun to change things up.

Let’s play a game.

It’s called “pick your crisis” and, I promise, it’ll be great fun.

THREAD.
In one corner we have the gallant Prime Minister.

Her supporters, the five-minutes-to-midnighters, are waving banners: “Run Down the Clock!”

They are waiting and waiting until the last possible moment to hold the "meaningful vote"
In the other corner we have a motley crew: Nick Boles, Yvette Cooper and Dominic Grieve.

They have a banner too, a rather long one: “Let Parliament take control, please, for a short period, for limited purposes”.

Their goal is to prevent the PM from running down the clock.

This doesn't make any sense, does it?

When would the EU decide whether to accept the request for an extension? Convene an emergency EUCO on March 28? Cuing market panic, stockpiling, etc?
Given that the UK can't ratify the Withdrawal Agreement until it has surmounted the meaningful vote hurdle *and* the implementing legislation has been passed, I can't see how the EU would go along with a late-March vote
The inevitable extension will have to be asked for before the EUCO on March 21-22.

(This would also allow some time for the inevitable court challenges to run their course before the March 29 cliff edge)

If it isn't, well, sell £££s, fill the tank and stock up on canned goods.

The funny thing is that, legally speaking, it is actually really easy for Parliament to legislate to prevent a No Deal Brexit

It could pass a law requiring the Prime Minister to revoke the Article 50 notification on March 28 if the Withdrawal Agreement hasn't been ratified

This would, to say the least, be politically controversial.

But it is perfectly feasible, as a matter of law.

It follows from the @andywightman @JolyonMaugham case on revoking Article 50 unilaterally.

The UK could certainly safely revoke if Parliament legislated for it

The PM believed she could find a deal that all of her party could support. As per Chequers this was the soft Brexit for frictionless trade combined with the hard Brexit for an independent trade policy. Such a deal almost certainly cannot exist 2/
What we therefore ended up with was neither hard or soft Brexit - but instead put all of the PMs aspirations into the Political Declaration, a document which the EU could only agree to because it was aspirational. The PM sold it as done deal. 3/

I’m going to annoy everyone now by pointing out Leadsome has half a point here. If the motion is amended to require renegotiation, it may well not be possible as EU27 can (and I think probably would) refuse to re-open the Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration. 1/
If one is agreed, the WA+PD is likely to have begun its route through the EP at that stage, and EU27 will have already agreed it in principle. Hard to see what benefit there is for EU27 in reopening an agreement they are content with to give UK another shot at it. 2/
Why only half a point? That stands if the motion is amended to require a renegotiation, but not necessarily if it is amended to require a referendum for ratification to take place. Then the question is whether EU27 would allow an A50 extension for this to take place. 3/

They're now looking at November for a withdrawal agreement, and getting it agreed at December's euco.
So parliament is not going to see a withdrawal agreement this side of Christmas at least.
That's fun because if there's no withdrawal agreement in December - which there won't be - there'll be no time left for a general election before we get kicked out of Europe in March.
Which means there will then be a general election next summer, right when the economy is going down the drain. And that's when Corbyn steps in, nationalises everything, abolishes the monarchy and breaks up the country.
