Ready folks? This week’s bird is...#nocrow! It’s a raven. What strikes me as the clear indicator is the resource size of the bill. Even so far away it really stands out. The habitat is a good confidence boost for this is too.
In s second picture that @Astro_Limno sent, the size of the bill is even more clear.
This was a tough week, so thank you to everyone that wagered a guess. It really makes my day! See you next week!

NICELY DONE, TWITTER! Today’s #CrowOrNo contestant is most definitely a very wet raven. Mary Berry would likely not approve.
So what were the secrets this week? Although the wet feathers throw the texture a little, the hackles are still quite evident. And even at this angle the size and shape of the bill screams raven.

Well if I thought there was ani chance of fooling you I was sure wrong! Most everyone nailed this week’s challenge. These are neither crows nor corvids, they’re smooth-billed anis!
I captured this pair while on a trip to Costa Rice last year. The best tell that it’s not a corvid is (as may of you pointed out 🥰) the lack of nasal bristles! The long tail is also a good indicator because none of the Corvus sps have extra long tails, though many corvids do.

1) This is a thread I’ve been meaning to write for a while on fashion for academics. This is *NOT* a ‘how you should dress for an interview’ thread, but some thoughts on day-to-day academic sartorial issues. I start with the issues, then move to solutions I favor.
2) The public tip of the academic labor iceberg creates some challenges, because we don’t ordinarily wear business attire, though we aren’t taken seriously in certain situations if we’re too dressed down. I’m generalizing, of course, but I hear about this often from academics.
3) Bc we’re supposed to be ‘experts’ & ‘authorities,’ matters of age & appearance can be extra complicated in academic professional settings. I personally put a lot of thought & emphasis on how I look as I’m often dismissed for looking ‘too young to be a professor’...

So, there's a point Nate Silver keeps trying to make that I'm not sure is penetrating, which is that saying something has a 1 in 6 or 1 in 7 or 2 in 9 chance of happening, or whatever, is *not* saying it can't or won't happen.

Those are real odds. Solid chances.
You shouldn't bet your life savings on a 1 in 6 chance, but you wouldn't bet your life against it, either.
Whatever anyone says, whatever odds anyone is laying, there is a real chance for us to seize the Senate tomorrow and there is a real danger that we lose the House.

What we od about both of those pieces of information is: we vote.
