in the 4.5 months ive been w the @dandc, ive written a lot of stories about people who died, often in really awful ways. to write those stories, i have to track down loved ones + ask them painful questions.

it sucks. i make a lot of people cry.

but each story is so important.
today's example: i interviewed a daughter + a sister + some coworkers of two people who died last week in a horrible accident.

these two people left a gaping hole in their community. they will be so missed, and their stories are worth telling.

not a human, but still a really painful loss for this family in mendon. their beloved horse (and a grandson of a triple crown winner !!) was killed in a hit and run earlier this month:

this one's from december. kudos to @rahchachow for her work on this, too.

"The smile that’s in that picture? That is what he had all the time. The laughter and the jokes and the smiles, it was almost continuous."

paula dwello's son, zackary, was stabbed to death. his killers were sentenced last month.

two people were shot + killed in their driveway in october out in sodus. i talked to josh's niece for this story.

"I couldn’t believe that happened to them. I still can't really wrap my head around who would do this. Everybody loved Josh and Amber."

i sat in a family's living room + asked them about their 22-year-old daughter who overdosed on heroin a month before. her ashes were in an urn on the table next to us.

@cfortiz_dandc was incredible that day. he bonded w the family + helped them open up.

after a limo crash killed 20 people, i was sent out to cover the aftermath. for two days, i talked to families and friends about the horrifying accident and their immeasurable loss.

and one of those families was kind enough to let me into their home. we sat at their kitchen table for two hours as they showed me photos and told me stories and cried about the brother and son they would never see again.

i'll never forget this one.

another one i cant forget, partly bc i watched the chase but also bc of what the shooter's aunt said to me.

"I begged them. I pleaded with them. I said 'My nephew has mental illness. I know he’s going through a breakdown. Please don’t shoot my nephew.'"

anyway, im not sure what point im trying to get across here. my job is a little crazy and it seems to be hitting me today.

i guess i'll end with this: im so thankful for all the people who share their stories with me and so honored to be able to tell them. it is a privilege. 💫
