Today I have learned that Stories of The Law and How It’s Broken was the second highest-selling autobiography in 2018, behind Michelle Obama.

This isn’t a humblebrag. It’s a full-on arrogant boast, with a huge side of gratitude to all of you who made it happen.

Disappointingly, the Supreme Court has upheld the disgusting reforms, introduced by Theresa May, that prevent the wrongfully convicted receiving compensation for years spent in prison.

Legality is one thing. Whether this is morally justifiable in a civilised society is another.
The statutory compensation scheme, overseen by Chris Grayling’s Ministry of Justice, was changed at the request of Theresa May to effectively require someone whose conviction is quashed to prove their innocence. Proving innocence is virtually impossible.
(I’m eternally grateful to @CrimeLineLaw for pointing out that the law, although brought in while Chris Grayling was Justice Secretary, was in fact the work of our now-Prime Minister).

The Daily Mail’s front page claims that Jack Shepherd is “taking thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money to fund an appeal”. This is a lie.

As I explain here, the legal aid cost of his appeal is negligible. His solicitors will likely not receive a penny. thesecretbarrister.com/2019/01/05/don…
By all means, be outraged at his cowardice, his arrogance and his refusal to face justice. But legal aid is not the problem here. The Mail is exploiting this family’s grief to bang the same old tatty drum and whip up misinformed anger towards legal aid and access to justice.
An important addendum in light of this. If it is shown that Shepherd has means which he hid when applying for legal aid, then he should be required to pay back the costs of his publicly-funded defence. And, of course, there’d be the question of fraud.

Have just seen this quote from the Attorney General’s evidence yesterday (HT @JusticeGap).

“No suffering” as a consequence of cuts is simply untrue. Shame on Geoffrey Cox QC for denying the evidence of countless independent reports and the daily experience of practitioners.
Here, for example, is what the CPS Inspectorate said about Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) units in 2016.

“All areas are under-resourced for the current volume and even more so for anticipated future increases.”
Or from November just gone, when the Inspectorate found that 78% of letters sent to victims did not meet the quality standard expected.

#Juventus 2017/18 accounts cover a season when they won the league (for the seventh year in a row) and the Italian Cup, but were eliminated in the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by eventual winners Real Madrid. Some thoughts in the following thread.
#Juventus moved from €58m profit before tax to €10m loss in 2017/18 (€19m loss after tax), a €68m deterioration, largely due to profit on player sales falling by €46m from €140m to €94m. Including this activity, revenue (per Juve’s definition) dropped from €563m to €505m
#Juventus broadcasting revenue fell €33m (14%) to €200m, due to the earlier exit in the Champions League. For much the same reason, ticket sales declined €1m (2%) to €56m, but commercial income rose €25m (20%) to €146m. Player loans were down €2m to €8m.

#RealMadrid 2017/18 accounts cover a season when they finished third in La Liga, but won the Champions League for a third consecutive year, the fourth time in 5 years, plus the Club World Cup and European and Spanish Super Cups. Some thoughts in the following thread.
#RealMadrid profit before tax increased by €17m from €26m to €43m (profit after tax up €10m from €21m to €31m). Revenue (Madrid’s definition) rose 11% (€76m), their largest rise since 2000, to a record high of €751m, while profit on player sales was 4% (€2m) up at €54m.
All #RealMadrid revenue streams increased with the largest growth in marketing €41m (16%) to €295m, followed by international & friendly matches €13m (17%) to €100m, broadcasting €13m (8%) to €178m and membership fees & stadium revenue €8m (5%) to €174m.

OBAMA should be more mindful when accusing Trump about the press & leaks:

1. It is common knowledge among journalists that the #Obama administration has prosecuted more leakers under the 1917 Espionage Act than all former presidents combined. But few admit this truth.
2. The Committee to Protect Journalists released its first comprehensive report on US press freedom.

They discovered that the Obama administration’s policies have undermined the role of the press in three fundamental ways.
3. First, the government’s war on leaks has not only intimidated whistleblowers, it has ensnared journalists.

The FACT is, since 2010/2011 and come 2019/2020, the Ministry of Justice budget will have been cut by 40%. Just think about that for a second. A 40% cut!!! See this wonderful article outlining the crisis...the full blown emergency:

There's so much data from @TheLawSociety, but allow me to pick two of the best and in many ways, two of the worst.

Firstly, criminal defence solicitors in England and Wales have not recieved a pay increase since 1998. The silient killer in all of this is of course inflation.
