Next Thursday & Friday (February 7–8), @acslaw and the @TexasLRev are co-hosting a timely and important symposium at @UTexasLaw on "Reclaiming—and Restoring—Constitutional Norms."

Day 1 caps off with the first of two keynote presentations, with former Acting Attorney General @SallyQYates joining @BobbyChesney for a dinnertime conversation on the evolving role of the Justice Department, and potential avenues for reform.
Friday's events kick off at 8:15 CST with Panel 3—"Prosecutorial Independence"—starring @jadler1969, @BarbMcQuade, David Pozen (@ColumbiaLaw), @JoyceWhiteVance, and our own Susan Klein as moderator.

The final panel, on "Norms For—and Toward—the Judiciary," will run from 1:15–3 CST on Friday, with @ngertner, Tara Leigh Grove (@WMLawSchool), @ProfMMurray, @NeilScottSiegel, and Mark Tushnet (@Harvard_Law), moderated by Cary Franklin.

Thursday's #SCOTUS stay in the LA abortion case was already (likely) the _fourth_ time in three months that Chief Justice Roberts broke from his conservative colleagues and joined the more progressive Justices on a stay application.

A short #thread on why this is worth watching:
The first two were on the same day, November 2, 2018.

In the census litigation, the Court denied the Justice Department's application for a stay over noted dissents from Justices Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch:

And in the Juliana climate change case, the Court also denied an application for a stay from the Solicitor General, this time with Justices Thomas and Gorsuch noting that they would have granted the application:

With no noted dissents, #SCOTUS summarily denies stay sought by the unnamed, foreign government-owned corporation arising from a contempt citation for defying a grand-jury subpoena related to the Mueller investigation:

supremecourt.gov/orders/courtor…

This is not a surprising result.
As a result, the accumulation of the contempt fine will resume—which should presumably put (increasing) pressure on the mystery foreign government-owned corporation to either comply with the subpoena or to otherwise cooperate with the Soecial Counsel in exchange for dropping it.
This doesn’t end the appeal; the mystery corporation can still ask #SCOTUS to take the case on the merits. But the denial of the stay (and the absence of any noted dissents) is a pretty strong signal that the Justices are inclined to sit this one out.

Yesterday the papers reported that Kano Gov donated money to EFCC. EFCC has since refuted. Read story closely & you’ll find the donation was for a “National Anti-Corruption Marathon” (12/10/18). Google search throws up website (screenshots below) nationalanticorruptionmarathon.org.ng

A little more digging on Google throws up this story about the Marathon, from August:
Min of Sports flagging off registration for the Anti-Corruption Marathon. Story says Marathon organized by “Fair Play Sports Int’l Agency” in partnership w/ FMYS,NOC,AFN

From this story, it turns out that the EFCC was represented at that flag-off ceremony. Which makes a lot of sense. Public engagement & enlightenment are part of the mandate of EFCC. So if there’s going to be an Anti-Corruption Marathon, it makes sense for EFCC to engage, no?

THREAD: Conservatives who believe in the Constitution and the rule of law should also be concerned about this administration’s record. Time and again Trump has violated the law and transgressed constitutional norms.

Here’s a non-exhaustive list...
1. A federal judge ruled Trump’s child separation policy at the border violative of the requirements of due process. Haphazard and hastily drawn, the policy was later ended by the administration in the wake of its legal issues. apnews.com/e5370130616c49…
2. Trump’s appointment of Acting Attorney General Whitaker is widely thought to be improper at best & unconstitutional at worst, as it evades the Senate’s advise and consent role in an effort to frustrate the Special Counsel’s investigation. nytimes.com/2018/11/08/opi…

I have been working on radicalism, populism and extremism for 15 years, having published my first (co-authored) article in 2003. Time to take stock and reflect on the field and its gender unbalance #Thread
When I first started doing research on radical right-wing populist parties, I didn’t notice there was a strong overrepresentation of men. The other PhD students of my supervisor @CasMudde were mostly female and I met plenty of talented women scholars at conferences.
Moreover, influential books on radical right-wing populism were published in 2005-2006 by Elisabeth Carter, Michelle Hale Williams @PippaNorris and @TerriGivens by university presses and Elisabeth Iversflaten was publishing groundbreaking work in highly ranked journals.
