It is as pitiful a proposal as I've seen for some time. It's the same old max-fac bullshit, with some deeply idiotic Art 24 GATT spaff-off, mixed into a horrific pile of contradictory sludge.
They're not intending to lengthen transition. They're shortening it. That is not an alternate backstop. It's a future trade agreement based on technology which does not exist.
We cannot leverage the financial payments for a no-deal transition, because they are a legal obligation, not a trade off for future behaviour.
I could go on and on. But basically the proposals here are as old as Brexit. I'm shocked anyone has been stupid enough to be suckered into supporting them.

This is the crucial irony to the whole thing. The 'alternative arrangements' were already there. The backstop only kicked in if they failed.
The Brexiter outrage over the backstop is just anger at being forced to commit to a promise they made, rather than being free to break it.
It's like they're acting out a morality play on why the promise was necessary in the first place. It was necessary because they're a bunch of mewling lying deranged bed-wetting nationalist bellends. And so it has transpired.

OK so: hope. Not entirely clear where to find this rare and perishable resource at the moment, but there are little bits about.
There is a timetable and there is a list of names. The timetable is May coming back with with any changes to the deal she gets (I don't think she will but whatever) & Valentine's Day meaningful vote.
These provide new chances to extend Article 50 and for MPs to take control of the process. I admit I am not hopeful, given how cowardly they were yesterday. But.

No votes this week, and it looks better for the PM's deal, as the alternatives lose ground. No-deal as the default stays as a strong possibility, but the campaign for a referendum simply doesn't seem to have the support. So if it isn't going to be no-deal...

Brexit seems to be the solution to all our economic woes (short thread)

E.g., Hannan thinks that Brexit will be great because house prices will crash by 1/3. That will be great for first-time buyers, right?
Problem is last time house prices crashed (2008) home ownership in younger people did not increase. It decreased by quite a bit as can be seen in this graph. 2/
That's because housing prices are connected to lots of other things in the economy, such as job prospects, lending criteria. It's not that people in 2008 were like "Hey look, all those houses around us have become cheaper. Now we can finally buy!" 3/

A transition is sensible on its own terms, but we have agreed to this because of the lack of viable solutions we have so far offered. Certainly none have come from the parliament Leavers who, in rejecting the EEA & demanding regulatory divergence, have compounded the problem
Perhaps we could try bombing Dresden again or launching D-day 2 to force their hand? Otherwise, this comment is a total irrelevance. We would of course have facilitated the whole process if there had been anything like a plan, or willingness to accept a pragmatic compromise
