I'm literally a nuclear engineer with a degree in nuclear engineering and I go to wikipedia often to remember, recall, and yes even sometimes LEARN some nuclear engineering on wikipedia.

It's not perfect but wikipedia is actually a lot more reliable than a lot of online sources
For many people and an almost infinite list of topics, wikipedia presents the easiest way to grab introductory info. Will reading wikipedia make you an expert? No, but it's probably THE fastest way to grasp the basics of a topic easily
I also can't imagine making fun of someone who volunteers an incredible amount of time to make more information freely and easily available to the world for their LOOKS
This isn't good humor. It's not even mediocre humor. It's just being an enormous asshole.

The same people who say "nuclear is too expensive" are the ones who have been fighting tooth and nail for various subsidies, R&D funding, and renewable portfolio standards for wind and solar for DECADES
It's almost like people understand the value of supporting a technology that has explicit benefits beyond just paying the lowest price... but they are only willing to extend that argument to wind & solar.

If you're anti-nuke, just say it. Don't hide behind a bad-faith argument
It's ok to fight for R&D funding and subsudies for future and developing energy technologies!!! But if you're only willing to do that for some clean energy technologies and not for others, be explicit about it and be truthful about your reasons.

This graphic highlights the use of element scarcity relative to electronics and also reminds us that there's plenty of uranium and thorium in the ground-- but not infinite. There are 100s of years of uranium as is, BUT eventually, we'll have to recycle & extract from seawater 1/
In fact, a majority of the uranium we've mine is still around, only a bit has been "burned" aka fissioned in a reactor. With recycling of used nuclear fuel and certain reactor types (advanced reactors like fast breeder or molten salt reactors), we can be way more efficient 2/
Another smart uranium utilization path is through the extraction of uranium from seawater. While the concentrations of U in seawater are MUCH lower than in the ground, there is just so much of it that it would make uranium essentially renewable 3/

Women who earn A's in introductory physics courses feel as competent as men who earned C's.

This agrees with the anecdotes I've felt personally and discussed with other female engineers. It's also present long past intro classes, in my experience

A short story- once a male classmate told me he could always get the hw done [for a class we were both in] starting at 10 pm the night before and still do well. I felt bad for a while, as I'd always put in SO much work. Far later I learned "do well" meant Cs when I'd figured As
Now that's just one story from one person, but it's more indicative of something I took years to notice and is backed up by this study.

Women in engineering constantly FEEL that they're not succeeding enough in a way that far outweighs most of the men around them

Bangladesh 43 all out against West Indies. A few weeks back Afghanistan embarrassed itself against India in their debut Test. These pointless one sided Tests are diluting the quality of the format.
The problem is that we believe Afghanistan or Bangladesh have improved looking at their limited over performances. But these players aren't playing any real first class cricket to improve their Test match skill.
They can compete in home conditions, but away from home they are embarrassing to watch. It's true that most teams struggle away from home now, but at least they manage to compete in sessions. You can't have a contest over 5 days where one time is completely out of it.

Ok I’m going to share a story with you regarding a crisis pregnancy I had many years ago, I have previously shared this story on my own account but think it might be good to revisit it. I was 15 when I became pregnant, 15 when I gave birth too. My eldest is now 27 #togetherforyes
I concealed my pregnancy for 5.5 months, they were very frightening times indeed. I was in school in 5th year in an all girls school. I went back to school three weeks after delivering my baby. This photo is of my and my lovely little one when she was 4 weeks old #togetherforyes

I was about to head offline for 2 weeks, but I need to respond to this new paper from @ppchef before I go on whether #nuclear can operate flexibly. By coincidence, I just had a peer-reviewed article on this very subject accepted by Applied Energy by today! So here's a thread...

I'm going to defer technical discussion of whether nuclear plants (old and new) can ramp or change output to match fluctuations in net demand and contribute to system reliability/flexibility until my paper is released (short answer: they certainly can if doing so is valuable)...

Im seeing more discussion on possibility of using (smaller) #nuclear reactors to generate heat (instead of electricity) to eventually help decarbonize district heating (& cooling via evap. chillers), industrial process heat, etc. I've wondered: what are the economics? #thread 👇
Heat is much less valuable then electricity. Then again, a nuclear plant is a great heater! Only about 33% of heat generated by a reactor is converted to electricity. So would it be worth it to produce heat instead of power?
There are 3412 Btus per kWh of electricity. So 1 MMBtu = 293 kWh. One kWh wholesale electricity sells for say 3-6 cents. So that's about $8.80-17.60 per MMBtu of electricity sold.

Six #nuclear reactors closed since 2013. By my count, up to 23 more reactors may retire w/o policy or market conditions improving: 21.6 GW = ~1/5th of US fleet, 4% of US #electricity--and crucially, 12% of emissions-free generation.
