The United States is in the midst of an historic surge in oil production. This is a bigger story with global implications than most people realize.
Implications: a) shifts global balance of power away from OPEC b) lowers price pressure c) makes auto fuel efficiency a harder sell to many consumers d) lowers US manufacturing costs as fuel cost is important variable e) real environment consequences
I saw the environment implications first-hand in North Dakota in November, as oil production has surged. So has flaring of associated natural gas and methane leaks.

EPA air policy boss Bill Wehrum discusses choice EPA faces on climate change. Says his agenda and EPA's is working to "regulate correctly" re CO2. Reducing carbon emissions is a goal. But it is not agency's only priority. And he is still learning abt climate change, he says
Wehrum says Obama's Clean Power Plan--which he is now working to repeal--was fundamentally flawed. And asserts it is not fair to compare Trump-era EPA plan to Obama plan, even though EPA itself admitted net difference is more deaths in the United States.
Wehrum really wants to talk about the revisions to EPA Mercury rule, which EPA bosses feel that reporters have mischaracterized. Tells Emily Holden of the Guardian that he wants his chance to discuss MATS as it is known.

The NYT has written a great deal abt Chlorpyrifos since 2017, after Pruitt vetoed staff & decided not to ban it, despite evidence it's hurting farm workers/children. Abt 6 million lbs sprayed each yr on soybean/corn/oranges/almonds/
apples/asparagus/grape/broccoli/etc. Eat those?
Here are some of those stories, if you missed them. First, Pruitt rejects his own staff recommendations and decides not to ban the pesticide.

Then @RoniNYTimes and I got the EPA emails that showed how Pruitt in early 2017 had promised the farmers that use the pesticide he was there ready to help them. Emails also showed how EPA staff advice was rejected.

The first thing that jumped out at me: you can't prove something irrational. EITHER their fears are irrational, OR they have been proven -- what?
True? Even more ridiculous than we thought? Full of cheese?
There's something missing here. Missing on purpose I think. It's supposed to imply the answer is "true" without committing to that.

Between Sept. 24 and Oct. 28, New York Times reporters @KateKelly and @RPogrebin authored or contributed to a combined 12 news reports exploring the completely uncorroborated allegations of sexual misconduct leveled against Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
The vast majority of these reports — nearly every single one — worked to further the narrative that the judge was a violent, alcoholic sexual predator.

1) I'm not sure how to make people remember or care that 15 years ago the United States invaded Iraq, setting off a war that continues to this day, with several hundred thousand Iraqis dead, millions turned into refugees. I covered the invasion for the New York Times Magazine.
2) Though I'm a writer, I shot photos during the invasion as I drove a rented Hyundai SUV from Kuwait into Iraq via Safwan, then up the spine of the country to Nasiriya, Diwaniya, Hilla, Kut and finally Baghdad. Here's the Hyundai on March 19, 2003. It's clean--that will change
3) The photographer I worked with, Laurent vander Stockt, drove his own SUV. After several failed attempts to get into Iraq, one time turned back at gunpoint by U.S. soldiers, we finally got through, via what we guessed was a minefield (I followed Lauren tracks). Here's Laurent.
