This obviously requires me to reference that Cleveland famously fathered a child out of wedlock. Republicans responded by chanting at Cleveland events, “Ma, ma, where’s my pa?”
BUT THEN Cleveland won the presidency, and Democrats started chanting, “ma, ma, where’s my pa, off to the White House ha ha ha!”
And my personal favorite, “hurray for Maria (the mother of the child), hurray for the kid, I voted for Cleveland, and I’m damned glad I did!”
(This all worked out largely because Cleveland owned up to having relations with the woman, and added that he was sending her money to help her and his son.)
The 1880s were a wild time!
