I was asked lots of questions at ISO, Geneva about Nigeria's academic research outcomes, and i could hardly provide convincing answers.
▪I was asked why universities rely heavily on government funding to the point academicians always resort to strikes. I couldn't answer.
I was questioned on the estimates in USD, how much Nigeria Universities have made from selling technological inventions since the establishment of the first university, UI. I couldn't answer. Interestingly, foreigners know more about us than we know about ourselves.
Finally, the shocking revelation are as follows:
▪With the number of Professors we have, there's no single research from any Nigerian university that has culminated into a patent or a commercial invention. Benson Idahosa & Redeemers University are close to achieving this though.
There are about 460 US patents owned by Nigerian researchers working outside Nigeria. Foremost of the list is Prof. John Dabiri in the US. Furthermore, those who are currently within Nigeria university system achieved their patenting through universities abroad.
It is well. 😓
