#Nigeria''s @MBuhari has begun moves to officially extend the tenure of Ibrahim Idris as Inspector-General of @PoliceNG. Under Service Rules, Idris shd have retired on the 35th anniv of his enlistment, 3 Jan but has continued to run the police regardless.
s. 215(1)(a) of #Nigeria's constitution says: an Inspector-General of @PoliceNG shall be appointed by the President on advice of the Police Council from among serving members of the NPF.

IGP Idris can't be lawfully extended cos he's no longer serving & Police Council hasn't met.
s. 216(2) of the Constitution is v clear: "Before making any appointment to the office of the Inspector-General of @PoliceNG or removing him from office the President shall consult the Nigeria Police Council." A meeting of the Police Council is mandatory pre-condition.
Inspector-General of @PoliceNG, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, was officially born 15 January 1959. Today, he turns 60. It's a good time to wish him #HappyBirthday and #Goodbye
Mr. Ibrahim Kpotun Idris is 1st off, a @PoliceNG staff. Under the Constitution, only serving officers of the Force cn be appointed Inspector-General. As a result, he's subject to the Public Service Rules that apply to all pensionable positions in the Public Service of #Nigeria
Rule 020810(iii) of #Nigeria's Federal Public Service Rules (2009) require that: “the compulsory retirement age for all grades in the Service shall be 60 years or 35 years of pensionable service, whichever is earlier.”
IGP Kpotun Idris attained 35 yrs in service 11 days ago. To clear any doubt, the Public Service Rules say: “no officer shall be allowed to remain in service after attaining retirement age of 60 yrs or 35 yrs of pensionable service whichever is earlier.”
I.e, Mr. Kpotun Idris reaches 1 milestone today, having passed another one 11 days ago. He shd've bn on pre-retirement leave 3 months ago. In any case he lacked powers ystrday to appoint a new CP for Lagos or anywhere. He's no longer a police officer.
For those debating extension or Tazarçe for Mr. Kpotun Idris, he's beyond that. It is not lawful or legally possible to extend a person who is no longer in service. Not even President @MBuhari has such powers. We shd thank IGP Idris for his service & wish him well for the future
