Japanese companies who are/look like they are going to move their European HQ out of the UK because of Brexit - mostly if they have a large proportion of sales to EU, easier to invoice from within EU after Brexit. Others will remain/are already run on management fees only 1/
Daido Metal Europe - bearings manufacturer - employs around 180 people in UK. 84% of £80m sales to non-UK Europe. Set up Daido Metal Europe GmbH in 2017, transferred most of sales administration to it. 2/
Daifuku Europe - materials handling systems - employs around 70 people in UK, 2/3 of £17m sales are to non-UK Europe, branches in Sweden, Germany, Denmark. Set up UK branch of Daifuku Europe GmbH in Oct 2018. 3/

Novoferm Europe - garage/industrial door manufacturer, owned by Sanwa Shutter, employs 2500 across Europe, 148 in UK £450m turnover. Was holding company for Europe but as of Dec 2018, merged into Germany operation and became subsidiary of it. 5/
Sanden International Europe - compressors, vending machines, employs 223 people in UK, £0.5bn turnover, 84% non UK Europe. Being merged into Germany subsidiary Jan 2019.6/
Sharp Electronics Europe - technically not a Japanese company any more, owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai. £106m turnover (82% non UK EU) 200 UK employees. UK inventory/logistics/warehousing transferred to France, parts to Germany. Board/management still in UK. 2018 accounts overdue. 7/
Sony Europe - £3.5bn turnover, 81% to non UK Europe. Over 1000 employees in UK. Being merged into Netherlands subsidiary Sony Europe BV Oct 2018 (as tweeted by me at the time, not picked up by media until Jan 2019) 8/
Toshiba International - power systems side - >100 UK employees in European HQ, £82m turnover. Has been having a meltdown globally these past few years anyway. Set up Toshiba Client Solutions GmbH with a branch in the UK Oct 2018 9/
Vantec Europe - mainly provide Just in Time logistics for Nissan so news that X-Trail won't be built in UK is a blow. Employ >1200 in UK. £46m turnover. Had already set up UK branches of Vantec World Transport Netherlands in 2016. 10/
Yazaki Europe - cable harnesses for automotive, £2bn turnover, 87% non UK EU, 75 employees in UK. One to watch. Already has a UK branch of Germany subsidiary. 11/

A thread about Brexit, the UK, Germany and Japanese automotive companies, based on my response to a Brexiter in the FT comments section, where I got a bit fact-y👇Seemed a shame to let it go to waste.
Germany, particularly North Rhine Westphalia put a lot of effort into attracting Japanese companies since the 1960s. With the result that there are more Japanese companies in 🇩🇪 than the UK + one of the highest densities of Japanese outside of Japan in the Duesseldorf area. 1/
But Japanese automotive factories are not relocating from 🇬🇧to 🇩🇪now, they're opening up plants in Slovakia, Hungary, Czech Rep, Slovenia etc or Turkey or North Africa. So UK will have to be very cheap post Brexit to compete with that plus a tariff barrier and border checks. 2/

Fox also said ""Do they want to have an agreement that is based on trade, prosperity and jobs, or do they want an agreement that is based on the ideology of the bureaucrats in Brussels?" Presumably first option is "reasonable and fair" in Fox's view. 2/
Makes me realise, when Brits say "reasonable and fair" it is very much in the eye of the beholder, if it is not rules based. If you try translating "reasonable" into Japanese or French (as Barnier is probably trying to do), you hit problems 3/

European Parliament has just had an update on #Brexit from @danutahuebner who chairs the @EPInstitutional committee and is on the Brexit Steering Group (1)
▶️no idea when Brexit deal will arrive at European Parliament
▶️last point that Parliament can vote is first plenary session in March 19 because the second session would be too late
▶️negotiations have intensified but she hopes this isn't "a trick" (2)
▶️She had a meeting with @ukineu Sir Tim Barrow about the endgame
▶️political declaration on future relationship will not be legal text or legally binding
▶️views shifting towards political declaration being general because not enough time to negotiate the detail (3)

"#Brexit and EU agencies", our extensive look into third country relationships of the 36 EU agencies and how the UK might fit in.

Albeit largely technical, agencies will have huge implications on Brexit.

Five points stand out in particular:
First, Agencies matter. Like the customs union, they are a technical aspect of the EU, that works and was thus hardly discussed in the UK before #Brexit.
But they are important for single market, but also justice and home affairs.

UK gov thus has already asked to continue participation in selected agencies, in particular in sectors important to the UK economy, like aviation, chemicals or pharma.

Ford Transit moved 2Turkey 2013 with EU grant.
Jaguar Land Rover recently agreed 2 build a new plant in Slovakia with EU grant, owned by Tata, same company who trashed our steel industry & emptied workers pension funds.

Peugeot closed its Ryton (was Rootes Group) plant and moved production to Slovakia with EU grant.
British Army's new Ajax fighting vehicles to be built in SPAIN using SWEDISH steel at the request of the EU to support jobs in Spain with EU grant, rather than Wales.

Dyson gone 2 Malaysia, with EU loan. Crown Closures, Bournemouth (Was METAL BOX), gone 2Poland with EU grant,employed 1,200.
M&S manufacturing gone 2far east with EU loan.
Hornby models gone. In fact all toys & models gone from UK along with patents all with EU grants

1. The impossibility of meaningful treaty reform. We cannot edit the supranationalist DNA of the EU
2. The exclusion of the public from decisions relating to further integration. See Treaty of Lisbon.
3. The way in which the EU will seek homogenisation and integration for its own sake and for that of EU ideology over practical necessity.

Japanese Business Represenation have today released a statement on #Brexit that is quite remarkable.

Very direct calls to UK and EU-27 on transition, future relationship and third party agreements

On transition, they echo EU call for full single market and customs union participation of the UK.

Even more, they call for a long transition and clear extension mechanism.

Otherwise, Japanese companies would need to trigger 'do deal' contigency planning.
Equally blunt are their positions on the future relationship, incl calls for
- no tarriffs
- the UK to remain within a customs regime with the EU
- regulatory coherence
- UK participation in EU programmes

In short, please don't change anything that might rock the boat.
