I'm going to ignore the grade-A well actuallying going on here and say that I am just realizing what an astonishingly large % of folks deeeep in the bowels of current distributed systems problems... all seem to be working on CI/CD systems. Like, it just keeps coming up.
Several honeycomb customers. (Travis-CI case study is a good one: blog.travis-ci.com/2018-10-31-tra…) After every talk I hear from more folks being driven slowly mad trying to tend their CI/CD systems.
I mean, it makes sense... you get the long thin tail of errors that only ever happen once, arbitrary uploaded code snippets, noisy neighbors and uncleaned states and cotenancy and coordination problems out the ass...

Guess I'm just surprised at all the ultra bespokenesss of it.

YES. *This* is your management problem. Standing up stubbornly for engineers to get real engineering time allocated to fixing and paying down debt.

The line manager's voice
is often the only signal upper management gets about tech debt/infra/security...until it's too late.
If you feel like your org never EVER prioritizes infra or tech debt, you probably have weak line managers. Or inexperienced ones.

People say they can't get upper management to pay attention to their desperate pleas. This is true; it can be hard...the first time.
There's an easy way to flip the power dynamic though, when reality is so firmly on your side.

When they deny your request for eng time, patiently describe some of the things you are afraid will happen. Be friendly! In writing, with witnesses on carbon copy.

I get this a lot: "Do you support on prem? I'd really like to use you guys for observability, but I can't convince the security team to let me." (forlorn look)

So listen up, because I'm about to give you my answer as well as something much better: answers from *actual experts*.

Also, observability is something you should affirmatively WANT to use a third-party service in the cloud for. Let's think this through...
"What happens if you run your systems and your o11y tooling on the same hardware facilities, network, etc as your production services? What happens to your o11y when prod goes down?

Now you have n^2 problems. *And* you're stumbling around in a closet blind drunk."

(1/6) In tests last week, we ingested 26+ TB of telemetry in 4 hours and 20 minutes using @AzureFunctions, @AzureCosmosDB and @azurestorage (via Azure Databox). 51 million requests, 92 million dependency calls, 0.004% failure rate (all retried successfully). #Serverless
(2/6) My favorite thing about the current setup isn't speed (we can go faster), it's that almost every component autoscaled from (near) zero to handle the burst in load (CosmosDB being an exception as it is reserved). We also appreciate that sweet consumption based pricing
(3/6) There's a lot of furor around #Serverless / #FaaS right now. It's over-hyped, misunderstood and firmly in the grasp of consultants (hi). Let's not forget the weary pros who react with mistrust when it's mentioned: "it could go away like Silverlight" said one architect.

Problems in distributed systems that are suddenly much harder when you're building an exchange: a non-exhaustive list. (Thread).
Logging is *hard*. Much harder than you'd think, because most of the time logging is actually easy.

An exchange that only logs every ask and bid and every order filled can couple their logging infrastructure with their COGS - you get paid for things that you log, so...
...log everything, and invest in scaling up safe in the knowledge that your costs should rise in line with revenue.

Logging all quotes kills this, b/c anyone stuffing the order book with quotes is now filling your logging pipeline with data that isn't tied to revenue.
