Data is out from NASA, NOAA, and Hadley today (after being delayed by the government shutdown). All show 2018 as the fourth warmest year on record. 2018 is also the fourth year in a row above 1C in globally complete estimates. nytimes.com/interactive/20…
The UK Met Office has an excellent overview and intercomparison of all the different groups providing 2018 temperatures: metoffice.gov.uk/research/news/…
Also, because a certain fringe of folks seem to think that NASA and others fake the data, here is what happens if you use raw measurements from land/ ocean with no corrections for changes in measurement methods over time. Turns out you get more warming: carbonbrief.org/explainer-how-…
(that chart is a few years old, so it ends in 2016, but including the last two years doesn't change the picture much)

Back when I worked in the cleantech world for energy efficiency startups I came across a weird edge case where efficient lightbulbs like LEDs could actually be worse for the climate than inefficient incandescent bulbs. Sound crazy, right? 1/5
Well, it turns out that in Quebec nearly all of the electricity comes from near-zero carbon sources, mostly hydroelectricity. However, some homes still use natural gas for space heating. 2/5
While incandescent bulbs are pretty poor at turning electricity into light, they are (for that reason) rather good at turning electricity into heat. Switching from incandescent bulbs to LEDs wouldn't reduce much carbon – since the grid is nearly 100% clean. 3/5

Interesting new paper today on hurricane intensification, suggesting that hurricanes have been intensifying faster in recent years in a way that is consistent with what we see in climate models. washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…
I looked at a somewhat different question a few years back, how long it took between Cat 1 and Cat 4/5 intensity, but didn't see a clear trend:
In the new paper, the authors are looking specifically at how much intensification happens in a 24 hour period, which a more narrow question (and one more relevant for individual storm intensification). There they find a strong and robust signal across two different datasets.

Some rare good news for the climate: the more dire estimates of sea level rise from Antarctica may have been somewhat overestimated. My colleague @rtmcswee at @CarbonBrief has all the details: carbonbrief.org/studies-shed-n…
A prior study suggested that Antarctica alone could contribute a meter to sea levels by 2100; this study pushes back. However, this does not suggest sea level rise is not an issue; Antarctica, Greenland, and thermal expansion could still result in >1m by 2100 in the worst case.
As the author @flimsin points out, their new lower estimate for Antarctica is still higher than the estimate in the last (2013) IPCC assessment.

I oppose the use of a federal government #shutdown to achieve political goals. 5 lessons learned from the latest:

1. Local impact: Workers furloughed at IRS offices in Elmira, Jamestown. TSA at NY23 airports worked payless for a month. Farmers: no credit, contact with USDA.

2. Even people in safe middle class jobs can have trouble making ends meet if they miss a paycheck. When so many are living so close to bone, what is the rationale for a government #shutdown with nothing to show for it but suffering and a permanent $3 billion debt?

3. New Yorkers care about one another. We saw an example of that when the Lansing Food Pantry provided relief for TSA workers at the Ithaca airport. Similar efforts happened around the district during the latest government #shutdown.

As a furloughed scientist, I thought it worthwhile to use my PhD skills to look at evidence for the president’s claims of a national security crisis & whether his desire for a wall is an adequate justification for a government #shutdown that has cut off pay for 800,000 Americans.
What every American should be asking themselves right now is this: what is the evidence that our border is so unsafe that it constitutes a crisis and the need to #BuildTheWall? Evidence that would be needed to support such a claim are that...
(A) there has been a dramatic increase in people crossing our border over time, (B) there is an increase in crime with an increase in immigration, and immigrants commit more crimes than those within our borders, and/or (C) current strategies for border security are ineffective.

Today is day 28 of the government shutdown. Remember: this is now the *longest* shutdown in US history. There are no signs it's about to end.

I know it seems pointless, since everything feels deadlocked. But it's important to let our electeds know we're still watching their every move. Full list of GOP senators up in 2020 - linked in the tweet! Begins with Lamar Alexander, and ends with Thom Tillis.
If you're already called, it's definitely okay to call again. View constituent calls as being similar to calls to your lawyer, doctor or accountant. Call when you have something new to add to your file. Does that make sense?

After retiring from the military, I worked as Federal employee for a number of years, and then became an independent consultant. When the government shutdown for the 2nd time in a year, I went 2 months without work because I couldn't redo my contract, I bailed and...

... and became a full time writer. Pay is better and I'm not dependent on a bunch of asshole politicians.

I miss the work though. It was important stuff. It saved the government a lot of money. Made a lot of people's lives better. I was good at it.

But...

...I have bills to pay, people depend on me. I couldn't work like that.

So I took my nearly 30 years experience in military operations and I left.

And that's what is going to happen here. Those with the experience and the skills are going to bail out in disgust.

I had a conversation with my sister about the #Shutdown today. I'm recalling this as best I can. I called to tell her about a news alert regarding food stamps. Thanks to the government shutdown, stores can't process any SNAP benefits until it's over.

My sister, who is blind and has a severe mental illness, will be at risk of going without food but she supports Trump and stated that he needs the wall to keep people from taking benefits away from us.

The people who have been laid off are the ones who help stores process SNAP payments. Keeping American citizens fed is a nonessential service. THINK ABOUT THAT. If this shutdown goes any longer, people like her could be in danger of losing her health and food benefits.
