1/ Pay no attention to that imploding cabinet in Ottawa! The Building a Nation of Innovators report is out! Desperate to find all of @NavdeepSBains' talking points for the last three years in a single volume? (what? It's possible.) Then look no further! ic.gc.ca/eic/site/062.n…
2/ Seriously, that's all it is. There is nothing new in here. Except maybe the infographics, which take banality to new levels.
3/ Infographics are supposed to take complicated information and turn it into simple, easy to understand visual information. But in the hands of ISED, infographics are a means of turning a set of bullet points into a larger, less wieldy set of bullet points.
4/ For instance, here is how the Government of Canada wants you to think about 5G wireless. So much clearer this way.
5/ How do Superclusters build "eco-systems"? Let me count the ways...in a circle!
I know you are all skeptical of superclusters....but what if I showed them to you...on an exceedingly low-resolution MAP?
This would be sooooooo much less convincing without the visual, wouldn't it?
The entire government approach, in one graphic. Could it *be* more visually self-explanatory?
9/ (forgot to number those last ones, sorry. I think I am up to nine now)
10/ What I like about this visual is the way it centers the "New Approach" box (which for some mysterious reason is filled with arrows). The four elements of the approach surround the approach itself like apostles around Jesus in the Last Supper.
11/ Kids! Never explain the colour-coding on a graph with time on the x-axis. Leave them guessing. On the other hand, line widths should be proportional to how much you care about the opinions being consulted. The thinness of the FPT consultation line speaks for itself.
12/ From the inevitable "other people are doing things so we too must do things" section of the paper, a visual involving national flags. This report is about innovation, so it's imortant to try things which have never before been done in the entire history of graphic design.
13/ Ceci n'est pas un continuum.
14/ I mean, look, it's not quite Deloitte quality. But it's still pretty impressive. higheredstrategy.com/a-report-so-st…
15/ Thank you for your time. Other crises now await your attention. theglobeandmail.com/canada/article…
Actually, looking at that map more closely, the Oceans Supercluster appears to be located in the Iles de la Madeleine and the Advanced Manufacturing one somewhere on Manitoulin. RE-DRAWING THE FRONTIERS OF INNOVATION!!!
