/ Massachusetts' state EV rebate program is managed by a non-profit, called MOR-EV. In short, if you live in MA and buy an EV and you want a rebate, you apply to MOR-EV.
/ MOR has an interesting website which has data that will no doubt add to the Model 3 weirdness we've all come to expect. More on that in one second. This database tracks every rebate ever applied for by make and model.
/ The MOR data shows when a rebate application was received, when approved, the make and model of the car under the application, and most importantly, the date the vehicle was sold.
/ Logically, you would think an application would be presented AFTER a car was sold. And, in almost 95% of the instances, that is exactly what happened. Care to guess the one make and model where that logic doesn't apply? Worse, the Model 3 shenanigans only began in Q4.
/ Here is Model 3 data from late in Q3 and early Q4. You can see that virtually every rebate application post-dates the purchase price.
/ The weirdness starts in the third week in October. Here we start to see applications that PRE-DATE sales. Not by much, just a week to ten days, but still applications are coming in BEFORE the purchase date.
/ Things get progressively weirder as we get deeper into Q4. You see that the spread between purchase date and application date gets wider with each passing day.
/ Things get really bizarre on 12/31, that magical date. Look at the age spread now between purchase and application. One car allegedly sold on 12/31/18 had an application that was received by MOR on 12/9/2017. How is that possible?
/ It's just the Model 3. Model S and X applications show a normal pattern.
/ Nor does any other manufacturer or model have the Model 3 issue. Here are the Bolt, VW and Prius. All normal.
/ I have reached out to MOR to ask how the Model 3 discrepancy is possible. I have yet to hear. As a Sicilian, I have the conspiracy gene. I see conspiracies and boogeymen everywhere. But, I suspect there is an innocent explanation here. I just don't know what it is.
If anyone knows, I'd love to hear a rational explanation. I will post MOR's response when I receive it. Again, it is likely innocent. It also just adds to the Model 3 craziness we've all come to embrace. VIN gaps, unregistered cars, fleet sales. Nothing as it would seem.
