While waiting for Mr Kikki & Kikki Jr to Space Mountain their brains out yesterday, I had a lengthy chat with a friendly woman who turned out to be a Trump supporter. She was ... fascinating. And frustrating. 1/
First thing you need to know is this: every place we’ve gone into down here that had a news channel on was playing Fox. And I mean EVERY place. It’s like an epidemic. Next thing you need to know: Trump supporters think Fox News is “unbiased”. Sincerely. 2/
I chatted with this woman for about an hour. She expressed concern about the “half million invaders” approaching the southern border. I asked if she really believed this “invasion” narrative. She was stunned that I didn’t. 3/
This very friendly woman - from a north eastern blue state - truly believes a half million “of those people” are invading through the southern border with a goal of hostile takeover of “her” country. And there was no convincing her differently. Facts be damned. She KNOWS it. 4/
But it’s not just about the southern border. She also sincerely believes Russian trolls online are pushing vaccines because the vaccines have something in them that will eventually result in a genocide of “the white race”. You can imagine my reaction to this belief. 5/
Like I said, we chatted freely for about an hour. And she was a pleasant and kindly woman. Reasonably intelligent. Works hard. Her husband works hard. Just an average seeming couple with the most corrupted ability to think critically I’ve ever encountered. 6/
I suggested that she may want to not watch any cable news for a while. “Not just Fox”, says I. “All of it. Turn it all off for a month. See how your fears change in that time frame, absent of propaganda.” She didn’t like this. She NEEDS her Foxy. 7/
In the end, I had to walk away. I mean, I wasn’t going to change her mind. And I didn’t want her encounter with a Canadian to amount to me shitting all over her in the “Happiest Place on Earth”. So I gave her hand a squeeze, thanked her for the chat. 8/
Before I walked away, she asked me if maybe I knew an old friend of hers who lives in Toronto. I said that was very unlikely, given I’d already told her I live on the other side of Canada. She gave me a confused smile. And that was that. /end
