X : Why don't you like case studies?
Me : I do, but only when they include negative examples. When something just has positive case examples then I normally throw it in the bin as snake oil.
... I don't trust anything which can't find negative examples or failures or admit to this. It's like when I visit a web site and it's all "we're magic, this is wonderful, we can do everything" .. I tend to walk away because it's just nonsense.
X : Aren't your maps guilty of this?
Me : My maps are imperfect and as models they are also wrong. My maps won't tell you what to do, they just provide you a way of communicating, learning and challenging assumptions in an environment. Not everyone will find them useful.
... if you can accept that, if you put in the effort then you might find them useful.
X: How useful?
Me: Who knows. It depends upon your environment.
X : That's not much of an advert.
Me : You don't like my motto of - "It's a map. It might be useful"?
X : No.
Me : How about my more advanced motto.
X : I'm dreading this.
Me: It's a map. It might be useful. Use it, if it is useful.
X : That's hopeless.
