1. I want to go on record with this: I do not think Amazon HQ2 would have "hurt" NYC.
2. I think NYC is one of the few cities & metros that can actually absorb investments & jobs of that scale without having huge impacts on housing, wages & transit.
3. I've long thought that NYC & Amazon could be a good fit.
4. And I actually don't like seeing Queens lose this investment & jobs, which if done right could have been good for the boro.
5. The problem & the deal breaker was the $3 billion in incentives which Amazon does not need & which should be used for more pressing needs.
6. The right thing to do was for Amazon to say it did not need the incentives & sit down & negotiate a better deal with the neighborhood, city & state. I urged this again this past Sunday: nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-ope…
7. There is no doubt the state & city botched & bungled aspects of the deal, but after a year-plus search & uber-detailed vetting process the onus was on the company to make this work. And I'll bet they could have.
