One of the “tips” I have seen a lot of people give to writers who are having “writer’s block” (being unable to write) is to take a break and go outside. Does not always work. Not for me at least.
If I am not being able to write, that thought that I have writing to do and am not doing it, just permeates everything. Totally messes up mind even more. The “break” only becomes an extended period of not writing, making things worse.
So what’s my take on tackling writer’s block? Simple: grit your teeth and write. It might be total muck. You might hate it. But once you see those letters and words on a paper or screen, you will start feeling better.
One critical thing to remember is: you do not lose your ability to write. It is always going to be there. It just gathers rust. And the lesser you write, the more rusty it gets.
I am not against writers taking time off or going on a holiday. But I am not sure I like the idea of going away to avoid writing. Never do anything that makes writing feel like a liability. It is your art. Your craft. Nurture and hone it. Don’t dodge it.
