Bea Arthur: Nazi-Fighter.
Note: Bea Arthur was not actually a combat Marine in the Second World War. I would have thought this went without saying, but I'm new to the internet.
Arthur, then Bernice Frankel, enlisted in 1943. She did her training at Hunter College in New York City, and spent the rest of the war as a driver and dispatcher at a Marine base in North Carolina.

Here's something small but weird and cool. In the last ten minutes or so, my timeline has gone from "BERNIE!" and "BERNIE SUCKS!" to "Here's why I support him even though he has issues" and "here's why I'm not likely to support him even though I dig some of what he's doing."
I'm optimistic enough to believe that we're not going to see a full-on replay of the unending ugliness of the 2016 primaries. Most of us aren't interested in reliving that, and a lot of us are going to be blocking those who are.
And yes, it's a tiny and unrepresentative sample size, but I take heart from the fact that—on my tiny timeline at least—a lot of people on both sides of the Bernie divide woke up going "AAAAAAH!" but then smoothed down their shirts and got in the shower.

If you're a person who escalates every online disagreement to a flamewar, you're going to repel people who are interested in actual conversation, and attract people who are willing to participate in your flamewars.
As a result, your experience of online interaction is going to be severely distorted, but that distortion is going to be invisible to you.

06/01/2019 - 78 years ago today, the longest-serving #UnitedStates #President, #Franklin D. #Roosevelt (#FDR) addressed the 77th #Congress with his "#Four #Freedoms" speech with the intent to shift #US #foreign #policy from that of #neutrality to #interventionist.
#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.

It is exhausting how much of this is wrong or confused. And in particular, how much that is wrong or confused has been repeatedly corrected already. Is it even worth pointing out again when the same stuff gets recycled a month later anyway?
Maybe I’m looking back through rose tinted glasses, but I feel like it used to be a little better. When a talking point had been conclusively refuted (like, e.g., the “circular sourcing” business) reputable commenters would—perhaps grudgingly, and usually quietly—drop it.
I don’t even think it’s outright dishonesty, exactly: I doubt Hanson KNOWS any of the claims he’s making are false. He probably just hasn’t looked too closely at what experts had to say about any of it.
