1. After 21 days in Syria waiting for a place no larger than Central Park under the control of ISIS to fall, @ivorprickett & I are heading home. We were among the first to sit down with two American women who joined ISIS & who are now begging to come home: nytimes.com/2019/02/22/pod…
2. Hoda Muthana was 20 when she lied to her strict immigrant parents, used the money they gave her to enroll in classes at the University of Birmingham, then withdrew, receiving a refund check. She used the money to buy a ticket to Istanbul, before slipping into the caliphate.
3. (Bear with me please as we now take a 10-hour intermission, as my flight ✈️ to New York plies the skies. Back at ya when I’m allowed to use my phone again.)

1. Three days ago, a devastating attack on Muslim worshippers in New Zealand shook the world. Today, the ISIS spokesman - a man so secretive we don’t even know what he looks like - issued his first statement in 6 months, calling for revenge attacks in retaliation for those deaths
2. All the major jihadist groups have issued statements milking the New Zealand attack for their ends including al-Qaeda, the Taliban, HTS, Shabaab. All are calling for revenge. Why is the audio released by ISIS’ Abu Hassan al-Muhajir significant?
3. Muhajir - presumably a made-up name of a man who has managed to hide his identity so well that not a single photo of him exists in the public sphere - is a hunted man. This is his first statement in half-a-year and his last recording in 2018 was under 4 min. long.

1. A few days ago, I sat down with Hoda Muthana,m in Syria. She had traveled from Alabama to Syria on a US passport but she was worried that her US citizenship might be called into question. That’s exactly what has happened. See statement from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo:
2. Muthana, now 24, has already been issued two US passports: Once when she was a child and the second one in 2014, when she used it to travel overseas to join ISIS. So how can Pompeo say that she’s not a citizen? The technicality is that she is the daughter of a Yemeni diplomat.
3. According to the 14th amendment, people born in the US - as Muthana was - are citizens of the US and “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” What does that mean if you’re the daughter of a Yemeni diplomat? Well a diplomat is subject to the jurisdiction of his or her own country

1/Good morning everyone, early on the Islamic State stood out from every jihadist group that had come before in part due to the Hollywood-esque propaganda videos it put out. One of the most famous is “Flames of War,” published in late 2014, narrated by an English speaker.
2/ Immediately, there was interest in the narrator of the video, which shows prisoners forced to dig their own graves before being shot in the head. He sounded North American. The FBI even put out a call to the public asking for help identifying him: fbi.gov/news/stories/h…
3/ That same narrator would go on to narrate the most important English-language releases by ISIS, from its daily radio show, to an audio boasting about the Paris attacks. He was captured last month and @ivorprickett and I were the first to interview him: nyti.ms/2V7bm6r?smid=n…
