The most fundamental misunderstanding about the Brexit referendum was that it was a choice between 2 equally desirable outcomes, like having melon or soup as a starter.

But the melon turned out to be rancid. Should the chef serve it anyway, because that's what the diners wanted?
And should the diners eat the stinking grey mass of pulp, even though they know it will make them ill.

In hindsight, melon was never a choice at all, and the diners shouldn't have been given an option.
It's not too late to avoid a week in bed with a bucket within easy reach. We could still go around the table, grab all the plates, and serve soup instead. But we have to do it soon, because melon-noshing time is almost upon us.
