Wale’s Red Table made me smile in a different sort of way because till today I still remember the first time I saw a Nigerian couple ‘in love’ as a kid. As in displaying that love. It was such a shock to the system. Like 3 decades ago and I can describe the scene to you today
Ok, so my mum took us to go see a young couple who just got married (I’ve probably told this story before). Now these guys worked in the same office just down the corridor from each other. That context is important ...
Anyway, we sat in their really big living room that had a really long L-shaped sofa. We were in their house for well over an hour and they sat right next to each other - bodies touching - and holding hands the *entire time* we were there
I mean, I was a little boy and I had never seen Nigerians do something like that before. The guy would keep quiet and turn to look her while she was talking (still holding hands) with a big smile. She’d the same when he was talking.
It really hit me because they worked in the same office so they were probably seeing each other throughout the day and there they were, seemingly unable to get enough of each other. People in love are not normal anyway so whatever
