If I have some sympathy for APC (only some), it is that party management in Nigeria is almost an impossible task. They didnt help themselves but the task is hard. Enforcing party discipline in Nigeria is like herding cats
And yet this is an underrated but critical part of democracy. It's getting harder in the West as well with social media etc but there was a time it wasn't this bad. Yet Nigeria, like in many other areas, has arrived at the same point without the journey
The way Nigerian politicians behave is incredible. Consider Amosun. He is running for senate under APC. But his sponsored candidate is running for governor under APM. He will campaign against his own party in guber and for them in senate
Everywhere you look you just see political recklessness and indiscipline. A party as small as Fela's A whatever was factionalised. SDP with no chance of the presidency has factions. There is something going on here beyond just politics. Inability to cooperate is the norm
I've often said that PDP don't know their biggest achievement. The first truly national party in Nigeria. In 16yrs they produced a Yoruba, Hausa and an Ijaw president named Ebele. But even at that, the wheels finally came off in 2013/2014 with nPDP
And look at Oby Ezekwesili and ACPN today. She announces she's stepping down and her party immediately endorses Buhari. I mean, is this normal behaviour?
I don’t know what the solution is. Perhaps the position and skill of party whips should be raised in status. But it is worth pondering the thought - what is the most in terms of economic development you can get out of a system where politicians don’t cooperate?
