The other night at the hospital, I witnessed some shocking behavior & sub par care by a night shift #hospice #nurse-Hospice nurses ensure a dying patient receives dignified #EOL while being kept as comfortable as possible. For 12 hours -2/28-3/1, Melissa didn't get either. THREAD
I was sitting with Melissa, trying to calm her, she was agitated. RN Deb came in. She looked at me & asked who I was. Due to her tone, I told her I was family. She wanted to know who was staying over. We were curtly told only 2 were allowed, not 4. SHE was mistaken. #Hospice
Michele, patients mother very upset. RN Deb yelled at Melissa's Nieces. Told the little girls they were very bad & didn't belong up here. The girls weren't misbehaving. They weren't doing anything wrong, nor unattended in the common area of the #PalliativeCare #Hospice wing
RN gave Ativan between 9-9:30pm. 10pm RN came in moved Melissa's arms. No repositioning her body as she stated she would. No incontinence check/bowels.
10:45pm had to ask RN to suction. Between 10pm - 2:30am RN never came to check on Melissa
PCT~ in at 11:30pm, 1:55 am #Hospice
2:30am RN came in. Moved Melissa's arms, no repositioning, no incontinent check for BM. Melissa was anxious & uncomfortable her Aunt asked how often she gets Ativan. RN said "let me look, I have more than just one patient on Ativan." Checked computer- "next dose at 6am." #Hospice
Aunt told RN Deb she needed Ativan q 4 hrs per what family was told. Asked RN Deb to give her Ativan PRN. Call Nightfloat if needed. RN asked who Aunt was. She said: I'm her Aunt. I'm also a Hem/Onc/Hospice RN. RN Deb gave a nasty look, ignored request & left room #Hospice
Family attempted to comfort Melissa. Family repositioned Melissa the best they could. 3:35am RN came in gave Melissa a bolus of pain med. Said she'd be back to reposition Melissa to left side. She'd been on her back & hadn't been repositioned throughout RN's shift by RN #Hospice
Aunt asked RN to suction Melissa. RN said she suctioned at beginning of shift. REFUSED to suction patient. Didn't reposition Melissa onto side Returned w PCT pull Melissa up very little in bed. No incontinent check. 3:40am mouth care, used lip ointment b/c family asked #Hospice
The most infuriating thing was when RN went out of her way to remove a chair in the room that didn't belong. Switched chair out. Who gives a fuck? It's 3:30am! RN, Deb continued with major attitude. #Hospice
6:00 RN. Deb, gave Melissa her Ativan IVP. Moved her right arm. Basically the only changing of position throughout entire shift was moving Melissa's arms. No other care was given throughout RN Deb 's
12 hr. shift w Melissa DePalmo.
#Hospice
After shift change, we let the morning nurse & the Doc know about our unpleasant evening. How unnecessarily uncomfortable Melissa was all night. How a chair was more important than #EOL care. No one should have such a lack of care during their last days. #Hospice
#Hospice patients should never be left in the same position for 12hrs. Adjusting a patients arms isn't helping when they have been on their back and are rattling/crispy coughing
If you aren't up for the task, or have the fortitude to be a hospice nurse, CHANGE CAREERS!
RN Deb also the removed call bell, off Melissa's bed. She placed it with the telephone - into BP cuff basket. Call bell was not within patient's reach throughout entire 12 hour shift. This is against the law. #Hospice patients are NOT less than. They matter. They deserve dignity
Melissa is only 36yrs old~ with a very sweet 6yr old daughter, Stella. This is the only problem her family has encountered during Melissa's hospice stay on 4-1200. Very sad to experience this RN's very unprofessional attitude ~while watching our loved ones Journey Home. #Hospice
