Imagine what the reaction would be if a Conservative MP and Conservative councillors were recorded using disparaging racialised language about ethnic minority allegations of racism, to general amusement from their political allies in the room.
Imagine being a Labour councillor joking about making hostility to Jews a party slogan, and thinking that this was an acceptable way to behave.
To be clear: I’m not saying racism doesn’t exist within the Conservative party. I’m saying that behaviour like this would be immediately, and rightly, met with a wave of outrage. The centre left - including Labour - would be leading the criticism.
And that highlights a core problem with this kind of behaviour. A Labour Party with such a glaring double standard in identifying, stigmatising and punishing racism loses moral authority. Which in turn risks damaging the fight not just against anti-Semitism but against all racism
