During the first half of the 20th century, Penang was among Southeast Asia's most advanced cities.

Georgetown already had electric trolleybuses as early as 1924. Penang tram system was fairly extensive, and covered four routes. The trams were dismantled in 1964.
Jakarta also had a good tram system. Its first electric trams began operations in 1899 - even earlier than the first tram line in Holland.

The trams were segregated; first class for the Europeans. The trams were dismantled in the 60s - Sukarno saw them as a symbol of colonialism
Rangoon also had a network of trams - electric trams were introduced in the city in 1906. During the colonial period, Rangoon was immaculately planned with wide avenues and modern public buildings. Today, Yangon has the highest concentration of colonial buildings in SE Asia.
