Striking thing - Downing St failure to communicate this...
... Number 10, and PM failed from the beginning to even make the case that a compromise was required, which is clearly their belief now. They can’t make case that this deal saves manufacturing, because they have never rolled the pitch for the idea that there is anything to lose.
... from my conversations this lack of willingness or perhaps capacity to properly sell the deal, and even to take risks to sell deal, has led to mistrust on other side - that there has been a lack of ownership of the clear domestic consequences of this international negotiation.

French Customs on day 2 instigating what I think are 3rd Country “reinforced” checks ahead of No Deal Brexit on all passengers at Eurostar terminal, (Calais too on freight) douane asking everyone (incl EU/UK) after bag search why in France, & for how long = lengthy queues/delays
Apparently could last for days now, & while queues here are not exactly unknown, and the French douane have had to endure many MUFC supporters gladly explain why they were in Paris... there are also what appear considerable hold ups on freight into Calais:
can assure you this most certainly is happening. Its literally here about 10 metres from where I am sitting and I can see it, and was asked alongside every other passenger same questions...

It’s the consequence of @theresa_may’s return to Brussels last week for her meeting with @JunckerEU /2
This dinner was significant if only because it constitutes ‘negotiations’ of sorts between two sides who’ve not really engaged directly since before Xmas.
Remember - 🇬🇧🇪🇺 negotiating teams signed off on #Brexit Withdrawal Agreement in Dec.

This seems nuts, I know, but imagine a world where we are right, deep in the endzone and it is clear that this is what gets the Withdrawal Agreement over the line.

By this point, the British parliament will have demonstrated it has no appetite or majority to crash out /2
And that would clearly be the heavy price of walking away from the backstop - which anyway cuts the old Dec 2020 'cliff-edge' pretty much in half.

One way or another a British prime minister will sign the NI backstop. Either it will be May as part of a negotiated exit deal or by someone else after we crash out when the EU is calling all the shots and demanding all its own terms.

Should we crash out then if even half of no deal warnings are true (and there is plenty evidence to suggest they are) then UK has zero leverage of any kind and will simply have to concede to whatever the EU puts on the table just to reopen talks - as no deal cannot stay no deal.
There is really no way to avoid a backstop of some sort. A review clause is the best we can hope for. The best strategy is to sign it then make damn sure it never gets activated by joining Efta and retaining the EEA. The remaining issues are then far simpler to resolve.

@MichelBarnier So why all the huffing and puffing, the sudden optimism about EU willingness and desire to cut a deal?

Well first, it's important to focus on what that 'deal' is in Oct/Nov - it's the withdrawal agreement.

2/ "In particular, the provisions of the Citizens' rights part of the
withdrawal agreement should apply as from the end of the transition period" page 4. De facto #Brexit date for FoM is hence end 2020.
3/ Para 13. "Notwithstanding paragraph 18 of these negotiating directives, the Union acquis should apply to and in the United Kingdom as if it were a Member State." Para 18 is about institutions, hence everything else applies.
