Do you remember Lord Trimble's legal challenge to the backstop? Announced with some fanfare, Today programme interview etc. Those people who have been crowdfunding it have got an update...
You'll be astonished to hear it's going nowhere fast: 'There is broad agreement from counsel that the case cannot be heard in a court of law at this stage. We have asked for opinions as to when that situation might change and are awaiting responses to that question from counsel.'
Fear not, there is still good work being done. A set of additional opinions have been commissioned 'to test and develop the grounds for our claim as part of our case preparation.'
These opinions can be used 'to inform and equip the UK government in its new policy, following the Brady amendment, of negotiating with the EU to seek alterations to the Backstop'
Anyway once something is decided which can actually be JR-ed they're ready: 'We are alert to the potential for a judicial review in the future if the final agreement reached between the UK and the EU fails to uphold the Belfast Agreement.'
The crowdfunder has so far raised £28k of a £50k target. Full update.
