ALRIGHT. WHITE ALLIES. @LeslieMac already tweeted about how this was a direct result of direct action training. Lemme point out specific places where I see it.
1) White ppl need to accept that police are IMMEDIATE threats to Black people lives. So when we say "your job at the protest is to protect us from danger"- we see danger different. The police are a danger to us in a way they aren't to you.
These folks knew that.
2) Look how they IMMEDIATELY followed him. You need to do that. That's indicative of direct action training.
Whiteness teaches you to be passive. To wait until he gets closer. Until it's too late to intervene. DONT. WAIT.
3) Fight the urge to say "the police shouldn't do that" They would. ASSUME that they would. Cause they did. Zoom in. The officer reached around her to get to him. They accepted BEFOREHAND that would happen. So they were prepared.
4) They surround him, pull him away from the police's grasp. Then surround him again. See how close they are? I ain't never seen white folks that close to Black folks even they "protecting us". STAY. CLOSE.
That takes direct action training. And practice.
5) THEN we get to the part everybody loves the shield. Self explanatory. But also notice there is a white person for every officer. 1:1 ratio.
That is direct action training at work.
"Would I ever do that?" is not the question to ask yourself. Instead try, "Do I REALLY believe the police are an immediate threat to Black people"? You would only show up the way these allies did if your answer is "yes."
Its more than forming a shield.
Its about believing us.
Why yes, I would like to be paid for my labor.
Why yes, you can book me for a training.
Why yes, I did just have an unexpected 200 dollar dentist appointment.
