What exactly happened at Guri Dam? "In 2017, Stratfor received an unconfirmed report that the government was dredging areas in the Guri Dam flood plain in Bolivar state for gold and other minerals."

In 2016 there was a YouTube video alleging incompetent Maduro bureaucrats were recklessly dredging round the dam itself.

What argues against any collapse scenario is it is the dry season in Venezuela and no reports of a breach have been reported. Still, what the anecdotes suggest is the gov't may be incompetent and not in control.
Perhaps cavitation damage from low water levels damaged the turbines.

One could say we are watching a struggle between two great and ancient religions, whose roots are in the distant past. One is known as 'capitalism' whose tenets are free will and individual salvation and damnation. The other attempts wants to build a secure group tower.
In truth many find freedom too distressing and frightening to endure. They'd prefer a handout provided it was assured; and a short and tolerable life to the terrifying prospect of eternity;
But as the story of the tower of Babel -- and the fall of Communism shows us -- security is illusory. We are trapped in a glorious and scary universe, whether we like it or not.

What we really want to measure in a world dominated by change is ability. For a long time what we were measuring in higher education was the admissions process not the snapshot stock of knowledge of graduates on commencement.
The corruption in higher ed's admission process means we need a better way of measuring 'ability' across fused domains, not simply the ones defined by department structures at universities.
One of the biggest drivers of income inequality and inefficiency today may be the education system. If it can't guarantee output and can't even maintain standards for inputs it will eventually go into crisis.

There were two glimpses of the 'apocalypse' in the last week. One in Baghouz, Syria where the caliphate came to a final, sordid end. The other was in Venezuela as the networks which supported modern life collapsed.
In both cases things fell to the lowest technology floor. No electric cars, smartwatches, bitcoin, cashless transaction or virtual communities. It was all blood, dirt, gasoline and personal.
Both were also self-inflicted products of ideologies that took 21st century technology as found magic and by ignorant incantation in the pursuit of ancient dreams unleashed the demons of hell.

#Gold is trading around $1300/oz at noon in the UK on Monday, holding onto most of Friday afternoon’s gains.
#Gold: As a reminder, we believe these gains come after a Wall Street Journal article suggested an early end to Fed balance sheet shrinkage (paywalled).

Gold: I find it ironic that that the government shutdown is making it 'harder' to trade #gold with confidence.

The CFTC's commitment of traders (COT) report is delayed indefinately while the US government is out of action.

Gold: Fortunately, Comex is not a government entity and continues to function. As you can see from here, open interest is reported daily and has increased quite a lot (4moz equiv) since 18 December.

Gold: Simplistically, with gold prices going up and OI up, speculators are likely adding to longs, driving the OI change and helping the price move higher.

I estimate the net managed money long is now at least 6.5 moz but could be more if short covering has happened too.
