Yesterday I found myself publicly attacked (using my name) along with @GnasherJew @mishtal @EuanPhilipps and @emmacpicken and @LabourAgainstAS . You may have seen @adammaanit ’s excellent and moving thread on this.

My crime appears to be that I have relentlessly called out Left wing antisemitism since 2014 (that’s way less time than many others, I know).

The main attack yesterday came from a prominent Jewish and Left wing lawyer. I won’t speculate on his motivations.

But the effect of his attack has been corrosive and damaging in multiple ways. He will know this.

Whilst I will admit to being upset and hurt by this attack (one based on untruths, half-truths and toxic spin), it’s nothing new.

I’ve been regularly accused by groups such as Jewish Voice for Labour of being a “far right activist” and similar. What really hurts is the attack on those non-Jews who have stood up for my community - Emma and Euan of LAAS in particular.

As others have said in the past – we do this because we HAVE to. They (non-Jews) do this because they are simply made of the right stuff. To see them attacked and abused is simply unbearable.

I am ashamed that some in my community feel the need (for all kinds of professional, political and psychological reasons) to side in degrees with those who wish Jews harm and feel able to attack those who seek to protect me and my family.

They bring shame on themselves and I feel shame by association.

That other individuals and organisations feel unable or unwilling to stand in front of some of those who do the dirty work of protecting British Jews from Left wing antisemitism is also a source of shame to me.

To “tone police” @LAAS, @GnasherJew , @mishtal and I - to use faux outrage over “bad language” - is of course to deflect from both the real danger that we face as a community and also to fail to acknowledge the effect that fighting in the sewer does.

It’s not nice, it’s not pretty and we often emerge covered in the slurry. If you want to shoot us for that, then go ahead.

The fight doesn’t end because of these attacks. But it makes it just that bit harder to summon the energy to climb back down into the depths. And that, of course, is exactly what those who wish Jews harm want.
