/ Many companies talk about tech debt, hiring debt, etc — *analytics debt* is equally important/foundational.
/ Operating without ability to reliably answer basic questions, or operating with distrust of data, is almost worse than operating with no data.
/ Too often, when co’s talk about analytics, they jump to Visualization, or selection of dashboarding tools. While important to democratize data & make insights digestible (& thus, actionable), jumping to tool selection misses the point
/ More important to start w/ Instrumentation, and build logging into product dev process. When new features are pushed, hold PM accountable to proper event logging. This takes discipline and is commonly overlooked in growth environments.
/ Helpful barometer: what is the cost (req’d time & resources) of asking/answering fundamental questions about a product or business? If execution is fast but ability to answer Qs on growth is limited, time to “slow down to speed up”
