Oh crap. I think I finally figured out publishing.

IT'S THE FAIRY REALM.

Think about it.

(Thread)
Time passes differently there. A hundred years can go by in the time it takes for an agent fairy to read a single query.
Sometimes an evil fairy may appear before you pretending to be a good fairy, and offer to make all your wishes come true. You must be on your guard and pay careful attention to the phrasing of your contract.
From the outisde, you see beautiful creatures dancing in an enchanted ring. You long to join them. But when you're drawn into their dance at last, you discover that the dancers (while joyful) are exhausted, compelled to keep dancing, staggering along in a mix of agony and bliss.
If you focus on what you want—on arriving at faerie/publishing—you'll never make it there. You must lose yourself in the journey (writing) in order to arrive at your destination.
This is true and also why everyone is so eager to hand out little treats and goodies as freebies at book events. Once you taste them, you will yearn for books/publishing/the fairy realm forever.

This is of course also why so many book people have funky hair colors. They tell you it's dyed, but it's really their fairy hair showing through.
Not only does your wish take twisted fairy time to come to fruition, but you cannot speak of it in the mortal realm until then. You are bound to silence and cannot speak of the unearthly joys you have tasted in Faerie.

I have been reminded that US publishing is centered in New York City, a strange and magical place that is extremely difficult to get to, but even harder to leave. And the many wonders which enchant and tempt you there inevitably wind up costing more than you bargained for.
