Today, tens of thousands of visitors to sites across Europe will see them entirely blacked out in protest of the EU's #CopyrightDirective for #Blackout21.

The #CopyrightDirective poses a dire threat to the future of the free, fair and open Internet. Sites are protesting in part because, as @Wikimedia says, this Directive makes the simplest basic actions of those Internet users—sharing and linking—suspect.

Under #Article11, the #LinkTax, text that contains more than a "snippet" from an article must be licensed and paid by whoever quotes the text—meaning countries could make laws that pass using as little as three words from a news story.

A few thoughts on the situation of Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun @rahaf84427714 - an 18-year-old Saudi woman stopped in Thailand attempting to flee to Australia from Kuwait:

1. Rahaf remains at risk of deportation and is in her Bangkok airport hotel room hrw.org/news/2019/01/0…
2. Rahaf says she has been verbally and physically abused by male family members, including threats to her life. @hrw has extensively documented discrimination against women in Saudi Arabia and authorities poor record of preventing family abuse hrw.org/report/2016/07…
3. It appears that Rahaf's father was appointed governor of al-Sulaimi, a small governorate in Ha'il province in 2012 hail2h.net/inf/news.php?a…

Of 18 detained activists, at least eight have been physically abused in custody, according to Saudi advisers, activists &others with knowledge of the prisoners’ treatment. One said security officials electrocuted her hands. “My fingers resembled barbecued meat, swollen and blue”
Glad to see some finally pay attention to misogyny in #Saudi Arabia - I call it gender apartheid. RIP Jamal Khashoggi. It should not be lost on us that it took the murder of a man for some to finally pay attention to women.
