With a week (or less!) until the final EU vote on the #CopyrightDirective, 130 European businesses call on the Parliament to reject it and save Europe's Internet from online surveillance by US Big Tech eff.org/deeplinks/2019…
The final vote is coming the week of March 25! That leaves us with just days to get the message to MEPs: vote against the Copyright Directive.

In one of the most contentious decisions in the European Union’s history, the European Parliament today voted to approve a directive that undermines Internet users' ability to share their work and creates new limits on their ability to link, quote, and critique the news.
The Parliament narrowly rejected (by 5 votes) debating the amendment that might have removed the controversial #article13 and #article11 from the Copyright Directive and then approved the unaltered text in its entirety.
The vote came after a weekend that saw hundred thousands of netizens protesting across Europe, and months of warnings against the directive by technologists from Tim Berners-Lee and Vint Cerf, non-profits like Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap, human rights experts, and academics.

Soy de los que piensan que hoy fue un mal día para internet.

La web concentrada de hoy en día presenta desafíos con impactos en economías y derechos.

Pero las soluciones exageradas y lesivas de la libre expresión son una pésima idea.
2/ Atender a esos problemas no debería crear problemas nuevos. En el tema de derechos de autor, los usuarios quedamos en el medio de la batalla de dos grandes lobbies. El de las empresas de internet, con un negocio nuevo basado en el flujo de información...
3/ Y por otro lado el del derecho de autor, un mecanismo del siglo 17 basado en el control de la información. Aunque sea para un fin loable: beneficiar a los artistas a través de la escasez artificial (control físico sobre experiencia de la obra)

In case you're wondering: the #EU just voted to impose filters on all the text, audio, photos, videos, etc you might post. If you think this will help photographers or other creators, you don't understand filters.
First of all: pirates laugh at filters. The most sophisticated image filters in the world - those used for state censorship in China - are trivial to evade citizenlab.ca/2018/08/cant-p… Anyone whose occupation is beating filters will beat filters.
But people who are legit? Including photogs? They're FUCKED. Filters can be intentionally bypassed if you know the trick, but if you're (say) a news photog whose photo of a protest includes a bus-ad with some stock imagery, the filters will not be able to know that you're legit.
