Next up is Nova Franklin Principle Designer at @WeAreMeld talking about how to help Non-Designers do research.
It's not about creating research experts, it's about helping people manage problems that they can own.
It's important to help newbies understand what they know, don't know, where they can grow and where can they go to seek help if they don't have deep expertise in something.

Creating generic discussion guides.

How do you introduce an interview session, how do you get to know a person.

Wrapping up guides that tell people to ask if participants have something else to say.
When new people do research they have a lot to think about so when you give them a list of questions they can become overwhelmed and just rattle off questions

Nova experimented with creating a journey phase on a piece of paper as a conversation tool
WTF cards — What's The Feeling — you select a few emotions and ask researchers to show them to participants and select a couple.
Teach people to be good listeners.

There's a long list but you only have to select one or two to work on.
Teach people to take really good notes.

Write everything down or use a transcription service so you don't miss important details.

Always have another person to note take.
Support your People who Do Research over video conference.
Teach people sense making.
Ask people to note down their initial assumptions to compare them against their findings.
Nova has tried to get people to cluster their notes on real time board but it kind of broke people.
Bring leaders into the tent at the beginning, support them when they have to present back, minimise your contributions so you can highlight the internal people.

Be the garnish — not the meal.
Nova let's other people speak first, and only adds to a conversation if necessary after people have had the space to talk.
Go with the flow — everyone needs something different. Being a coach or a mentor requires you to have lots of moves.
Pair up with someone on the inside because they know the organisation, the problems, the people and what they'll respond to.
Don't overwhelm people.

To get in a room with someone they don't know
Ask questions
Have to look smart

It makes them feel anxious.

Get them to do enough interviews to help them.
A bit is better than none (probably)
You're helping new people do new things, remember that and support them.
Outputs don't have to be beautiful artefacts, they can be low fidelity.

Sometimes shortcuts are necessary, help them understand what great looks like so they can emphasise that when they present
At the end of the project ask:

What did you do well?
What could be done better?

Really nice way to get them to reflect.
Nova's having question time with the audience to go deeper on a couple topics.
