I won’t post photos but “markings” many are noting on the #Christchurch shooter’s weapons are historic battles & leaders popular w far-right extremists including, in Cyrillic, “Miloš Obilić”, 14thC Serbian knight who killed Murad I @ 1389 Battle of Kosovo, also a far-right trope.
In other words, this has all the markings of a Breivik-style far-right extremist, likely explicitly neo-Nazi judging by some of his images, steeped in toxic, faux-historical narratives about “defending” white Christendom; hence references to Obilić, 1683 Battle of Vienna etc.
One more thought: the shooter makes repeated references to the “remove Kebab” meme, which is based on a propaganda video produced by Serb nationalist forces during the Bosnian War & Bosnian Genocide in 90s. Meshes w/ Obilić references & clear Breivik influence.
The “Remove Kebab” video & accompanying memes have been shared millions of times over the last several yrs. The Bosnian Genocide has become major ideological pillar among, and model for new-age far-right extremists, like the Holocaust in previous generations of their ilk.
Cannot confirm this bc I refuse to watch the video but colleagues noting music heard in portion of footage is from “Remove Kebab” video meme, known in original as “Bog je Srbin i on će nas čuvati” (“God is a Serb & he will protect us”). Clear familiarity w/ Bosnian Genocide.
I also suspect the use of the term “Turk(s)” as a slur, chalked up w/ homophonic variant on his rifle, is (partially) influenced by Serb ultra-nationalist rhetoric; referring to Bosniaks, sometimes Albanians & Kosovars, as “Turks” common among Serb far-right/ultra-nationalists.
My suspicion is rooted in the fact that “Turk” is not a common slur among Western far-right more generally but very common in the Balkans. And since he’s clearly familiar w/ Bosnian War & Genocide, my logic is he picked up on some of the extremist terminology in that context.
This report by @BalkanInsight confirms my commentary from last night re: the clear familiarity w/ Serb nationalist motifs, themes by the #Christchurch attacker. Worth unpacking in detail the influence & absorption of Bosnian Genocide by Western far-right. balkaninsight.com/2019/03/15/new…
