Ok so this will come as no surprise to most of you, but: I am a TOTAL NERD & always have been.
I’m also a good test taker. Which means I did really well on the SAT & AP Exams. So well that I was qualified to teach SAT & AP Exam prep classes for a national test prep company. Which
I did, during college. One summer, I did private SAT tutoring in Los Angeles. Some of my students were extremely wealthy (private tutoring is expensive so that’s not surprising). But ya know what? Every single one of my students was highly motivated to improve their score. Every
one of them worked their butts off to do better. They practiced. They studied. They tried. And I will not argue the lack of fairness of the wealthy having access to educational assistance that the impoverished don’t have access to-that’s an injustice. But I will say, those kids
I taught, their parents could have afforded to do the easy & immoral thing and just bought their kids’ way in to college. But instead, those parents pushed and motivated their kids to work hard to get in on their own. And those kids, because of how they were raised, were
motivated to work and to try. One of my students was not from California. They were from out of state but spending the *entire summer* at a posh hotel in Beverly Hills. We did our tutoring sessions poolside-total lap of luxury. But that girl worked her butt off. She was kind and
she had a good work ethic. And she improved her score! A lot!
All this to remind people: The disparity in educational opportunities for rich & poor is ABSOLUTELY a huge issue. But with the college admissions cheating scam, the wealth is not the main problem. The attitude that “my
kid deserves this because we can afford it,” THAT is the issue. The feelings of superiority based solely on the bank account balances, the sense of entitlement to unmeritocratic rises based on ability to pay, the cheating, the lying, the immorality, the lack of ethics-those are
the problem, in this case. We have a SHIT-TON of work to do to improve our education system so EVERY CHILD can receive a high quality, enriching education-a long way to go. Wealth disparity is part of the problem-but I’d argue ethical/moral disparity is a bigger problem...
Por ejemplo, the moral bankruptcy on display in Michigan:
Moral bankruptcy: school choice, aka legal segregation.
Moral bankruptcy: cnn.com/2019/03/13/pol…
Moral bankruptcy: betsy devos trying to kill student loan forgiveness. politico.com/story/2018/12/…
Moral bankruptcy: for-profit colleges ripping off veterans pbs.org/newshour/educa…
Moral bankruptcy: 1st degree larceny for a homeless woman who signed her kid up for public school in Norwalk when she...was homeless.
Moral bankruptcy: I knew a Teach for America teacher who was placed in a school on a reservation. There was no money for paper. Paper!
Moral bankruptcy: parents who want to send their unnecessarily unvaxxed biological terrorists to school during an epidemic.
