My college Russian prof said there are three great novels in the world: the Anglo-American novel, the French novel, and the Russian novel.

And just to clarify this one last time, @philipaklein, my position is: "Trump appointed a good judge?Okay. But you should not spend undue time on it, because it takes away from attention you should be spending on the destruction of the system that judge must serve." /1
@philipaklein The "I'm not really for Trump, but I am really sort of for Trump" conservatives keep pointing to judges as the salve over some minor woulds that somehow will now staunch the bleeding from all the arteries Trump is severing. It makes you feel better, but it's pointless. /2
@philipaklein Those judges you like are now going to serve in a system that has been, for the first time in our modern history, subjected to a cult of personality rule. Some of them, I am glad they are there. Some, I am not. But the system is now heavily damaged, and judges can't fix it. /3

I admire this article and the civic attitude it represents. But I feel like it avoids something important: what does one do when some of your fellow citizens do not just disagree with you, but believe in - and advocate - things that are genuinely contemptible? /1
It's one thing not to make normal political disagreements into grounds for contempt. In that case, sign me up for Brooks's call for kindness. I will admit I am first among sinners on that. But at some point, contemptible ideas must be treated with open contempt and shame. /2
I mean, when someone wears a t-shirt that implies lynching journalists, or explains why Roy Moore really isn't such a bad guy, or that Jews aren't patriots because they're Jews - I think contempt is a normal reaction that kicks in as part of a healthy allergy to such talk. /3

This comes up a lot, along with the usual liberal carping about the “Southern strategy“ and it’s worth a moment of comment, especially since I am stuck in an airport. /1
No arguing that mod-con GOPers like me treated the southern evangelical wing of the party with a shrug. I think many of us figured: Meh, we’re stuck with them, not just because of their racial views, but because they were conservative Christians not welcome among the Dems. /2
For people like me, the Southern strategy wasn’t a strategy. It was really just a “keep them in the tent and harvest their votes by default” strategy. This was Reagan’s approach, and it definitely pissed off the evangelicals, as GOPers knew back in 1984. /3

Tropes are the story arrangements which appeal to the widest audience of people. Authors twist tropes to remain fresh. As you twist them, you slide away from what attracts the greatest number of people.

Slide as far as you like, but be aware of your changing marketing target.
But if you twist correctly, that narrowed audience becomes obsessive and desperate to get your product.

You generate interest by making your twist fun enough that the new target audience craves the new take.

1/ Manu (The progenitor of Humankind)
All different races of Mankind are derived from Manu and Shradha. The current Manu is Vaivasvata Manu.
2/ The word Manu literary means man but it is a title given to the progenitor of mankind. According to Hindu Puranas there are many kalpas (One day of Lord Brahma the creator) and each Kalpa has 14 manvantara and each manvatara has one manu. So basically each Kalpa has 14 Manus.
3/ The current manu of the present manvantara is Shraddhadeva or Vaivasvata Manu of this current Kalpa. He is the son of Vivasvat (Probably Surya) and is therefore also known as Manu-vaivasvata.
