For all the promise of AI & machine learning in identifying malicious content, it’s extremely not what I want to hear about today. I don’t want to hear better algorithms could fix this. They could improve things, sure, but larger problem is at a leadership level, not a tech one.

That video didn’t go out b/c the algorithm isn’t smart enough yet or the abuse policy needs a new clause. It happened because tech leaders let it. They delivered an on demand global audience to a fame-craving violent extremist like it was a g.d. subscription box meal kit.

So what I’d dearly love right now is for the leaders of @Facebook and @Google and @Twitter talk deeply and with humility about their ethical responsibilities. As human beings. To society. To democracy. To the news. To the truth. To marginalized people. To faith based communities.

I want to hear them talking about how they’re going to bring as much passion to ending online hate as they’ve brought to online advertising. Broadcasting mass murder on social media platforms in real time isn’t a failure of technology. It's a failure of basic human decency.
