So... Magna Carta, Article 24 of the WTO, the European Convention on Human Rights, and Article 62 of the Vienna Convention. I wonder what is in store for next week? 1/
As @sylviademars has said, the law cannot prevent the UK reneging its international Treaty obligations. All it can do is indicate what the legal consequences of any breach will be. 2/
Legal disputes on the interpretation of the WA will be complex; some falling within the jurisdiction of the Joint Committee, others requiring reference to the case law of the Court of Justice. 3/
It may be well difficult to establish particular breaches; and the legal consequences of particular breaches may not turn out to be severe. 4/
But... the law is only a small part of the equation. Far more important are the political consequences of breach (and of bad faith). The political consequences are not difficult to predict. 5/
The task in the years ahead, if the WA passes, will be to negotiate a future relationship agreement with the EU. Trust in the UK is already very low. If the UK seeks (again) to escape the commitments it has made, trust will fall further. 6/
If the UK wants to secure a mutually beneficial future relationship deal, it urgently needs to start rebuilding that trust. The legal flailing we have seen this week is exactly the opposite of what is needed. 7/7
