The political culture in American and Europe is in the hands of revolutionaries who don’t hesitatate before proposing to tear down every inheritance of the past. But what gets torn down cannot be easily replaced.
They are certain that all this tearing down is going to bring something better that they’ve designed. In reality, it’s creating a vacuum of legitimacy. We have no idea who or what will step into that vacuum.
I don’t want to make too much of AOC, who may or may not disappear as quickly as she came. But her (possibly temporary) takeover of her party’s agenda from nowhere shows us what it looks like when all political traditions have been delegitimized and any crazy thing can take over.
There’s no reason to think things are much better in the GOP. Many European countries are in a similar condition. It would useful if public figures could stop this frenzy of overthrowing things for a while. But it looks like permanent revolution just is their idea of politics.
