I mean he’s right, but part of the reason Greek democracy appealed to the founding fathers was its integration of slavery, and later on its imperialism came in handy also
America found its own Laurion silver in industrialisation and from then on did a bunch of different Sicilian expeditions, so I’m not against the comparison, but it requires a more cynical view of Athenians and Americans both
It’s funny and apt that contemporary Greeks’ biggest criticism of Athens seems to have been that they were hypocrites - it wasn’t that they had slaves or had colonies, everyone did those things - it was that they acted as if they were above it
I was going to ask who America’s Melos was but on reflection there are too many to choose from
