I wrote recently about Trump using two formerly incarcerated black people, Matthew Charles and Alice Johnson, as props at the State of the Union. He had them stand to represent his shaky criminal justice reform package, then shortchanged it in his budget. rol.st/2Dgnb2Q
The FIRST STEP Act, Trump’s supposedly prized criminal justice reform, calls for $75 million per year for five years, starting in 2019. Trump only budgeted $14 million for it. bit.ly/2TJ3ZoJ
This story finally has a good ending. After being discriminated against for his history of incarceration, @Tennessean reported that Matthew Charles moved into a new home in Nashville on Saturday. @KimKardashian is covering his rent for the next five years. rssfeeds.tennessean.com/~/599934202/0/…

Christian nationalism (47 percent) may not be considered as much of a threat as white nationalism (64 percent) to those polled. But sociologist Andrew Whitehead notes that the former is “related to conceptions about citizenship and American identity that are related to race.”
“Although Whitehead noted there is no raw data connecting white nationalism to Christian nationalism, he said the latter allows many whites who take up its cause to express anti-black prejudice, as well as other right-wing ideologies, without resorting to ‘radicalized language.’”

Have we heard one word from Trump’s administration about this? Certainly nothing about any national emergency. (@govkristinoem declared a statewide one on March 15.) Remember, it isn’t about whether this is unsurprising. He remains @POTUS—and his silence is an abdication of duty.
This @MitchKSmith report on the flooding of South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is now a week old. There is surely updated information in local reports, but this gives you a baseline on the ongoing devastation. nyti.ms/2CCazDD
I am just now learning about Pine Ridge, and am lamenting that it took me this long to pay attention to its plight. I can only speak for myself in this regard, and quite often, people are suffering at epic proportions as I traffic in relative triviality. I’ll strive to do better.

A few things on those @PeteButtigieg remarks. One, a lot of us “coastal elites” are Midwesterners like him. We know all too well that Trump voters exist. And more of them live out here than he seems to realize. America doesn’t fit so snugly into a soundbite as he might like.
Two, @PeteButtigieg attempts to exchange one stereotype for another. This, of course, is impossible; he manages to mischaracterize Trump voters, as well, letting them off the hook for putting in place the most dangerously ignorant chief executive this nation has maybe ever seen.

1. Judge Ellis’ decision to depart below the Guidelines range of 19-24 years means there are a lot of people serving longer sentences for lesser crimes. Altho I believe Judge Berman will correct this, we are overdue on a serious national approach to criminal justice reform.
2. We incarcerate too many people for too long. We can have safer communities at a lower cost with shorter sentences & community-based approaches. We need to start making criminal justice policy on the basis of data, not ideology. Lock ‘em up & throw away the key doesn’t work.
3. We have to explicitly confront bias in the criminal justice system, whether it’s structural, or implicit or explicit bias on the part of decision-makers. We need to focus on prevention and successful reentry for people who have been in prison as much as we do on incarceration.

.@realDonaldTrump’s fantasies about his wall, his deafening silence on climate change & his Nixonian attack on @TheJusticeDept investigators, did not help.
I do applaud @realDonaldTrump’s recognition of our soldiers & law enforcement officers for the terrific work they do, and am eager to help with childhood cancer, infrastructure, and lowered drug prices.

We’ll see how serious he is about those issues in the weeks ahead. #SOTU
