Says @PeteButtigieg in this interview, coastal folks “have trouble believing that Trump voters actually exist” and that those voters are “just human beings making choices on their situations, sometimes their biases and we need to talk through them.” Sigh. kqed.org/news/11729874/…
A few things on those @PeteButtigieg remarks. One, a lot of us “coastal elites” are Midwesterners like him. We know all too well that Trump voters exist. And more of them live out here than he seems to realize. America doesn’t fit so snugly into a soundbite as he might like.
Two, @PeteButtigieg attempts to exchange one stereotype for another. This, of course, is impossible; he manages to mischaracterize Trump voters, as well, letting them off the hook for putting in place the most dangerously ignorant chief executive this nation has maybe ever seen.
I have more thoughts on this; perhaps there is a column in it. But @PeteButtigieg would be well-served to revisit the column that @jbouie published right after the 2016 election, as well as the research about what motivated most Trump voters to choose him. slate.me/2eX453y
