There’s a lot in this by @redhistorian. One obvious question though is why election of party leaders by the wider party hasn’t had that effect in other European countries.
The obvious and I suspect right answer is PR: PR forces activists to accept that their party just can’t have things all its own way, that parliament will ultimately decide, and that compromises will have to be made.
Put another way, the effect of party selection of leaders and emphasis on leaders’ accountability to their parties (always unrepresentative even of the party’s own voters) makes it even more important to avoid a majority being held by just one party on a minority of the vote.
