Today in Vatican City, Pope Francis joined 3 young women to contribute a line of code to an app, became the first Pope to program a computer, and called on students globally to learn computer science for world peace.
The pope blessed a plaque bearing the statement: “Computer science empowers young people to create peace in their communities. Everyone should learn how to harness technology, to use their creative power for peace.”
The three young women, 11-year-old Matilde Fábrega Vivanco from Chile, 13-year-old Nicole Rodriguez from New York, and 16-year-old Liuren Yin from China, are all students learning computer science in school.
The app they wrote shows how technology can be used to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals, to use technology for peace.
The event, organized by @InfoScholas, kicked off a broader campaign to introduce students in underprivileged communities, to encourage students globally to learn computer science, to use their creativity to improve the world, for peace.
