OK, so this is not a fair point, @GoodwinMJ. If there is a disconnect between what the people who were pushing for one result said and what the referendum is about, then that is all on them.
The referendum wasn't to return sovereignty, neither was it to stop freedom of movement. It was about whether or not we remain members of the European Union.
The question could not be clearer. It is about membership of the European Union. Not about sovereignty and not about freedom of movement.
We do not allow undemocratic people who we cannot hold to account to define a series of policies beyond that which is defined by the referendum law.
I don't give a damn what they said, as soon as we allow them to do that, we've allowed them to hijack our democratic process. There was no policy beyond leaving membership, The government will have delivered on that if we are no longer members.
We've had people argue "Oh we voted to leave the Single Market and do a Canadian deal" now arguing "We voted to leave without a deal". This is where this leads.
We have to stop this type of debate now and stick to what was written because it's the only way we can cut through the crap.
We let people say what they voted for, and it was just an ever moving landscape, so we're not doing this anymore.
We're in a mess politically, and so now we're going by the letter of the law.

It's membership, or not membership. That's what we were voting on. It's in black and white.
